Type of face: What suits you best

Our face shape influences when wearing a hat or even hairstyle. For each type of face there is a specific hairstyle and hats to get the most out of it.

Here you have a compilation of all face shapes and that looks better, including hairstyles. In order to know the best color I will leave you an entry with the combination with your skin tone.

Type of face Oval/elongated

It’s the most balanced type of face. Sometimes it can have a wide forehead. The most favorable hairstyles are medium/long soft waves and bob style.

Smooth medium/long waves

Bob style

Bob style soft waves

For hats, asymmetrical hats are the best choice. The top (the top) should be narrower than your cheekbones. Avoid linings that are too tight to your head, with large pom-poms.

Heart/triangle

The top is wider than the bottom. Long to the shoulders, waves loose and wide and capeado cut in the collarbone.

Wear hats with your forehead uncovered. If you wear accessories that are small on the top of your head or on one side. Avoid hats that are too tight or with wide wings. And the top should not be narrower than your cheekbones.

Type of face Diamond

Wider in center and narrow at the top and bottom of the face. Medium length with lateral line, short fringe with waves and pixie style.

The best hats are the fedora with short brim, berets and hats fitted to the head with pompon.

Loose hats, homburg hats, fedoras, infinite scarves such as hoods, wool hats with pompom, berets and delivery caps.

Celebrate Christmas handmade

Spend, spend and spend. From the decoration to the clothes we are going to wear, passing through the gifts. Everything around Christmas is based on spending money to spend a good holiday. But it’s possible to have a great Christmas doing it yourself. This year opts for a Christmas handmade.

Do it all yourself. The decor, everyone’s Christmas gifts and the clothes you’ll wear for all the holidays and Christmas meetings.

What you need to do first is decorate so it’s ready for Christmas. You have an entry I made for it here.

The next thing we have to do with a little anticipation for our Christmas handmade, is the clothes that we are going to take for the parties as much of company as of family.

Clothes for a Christmas handmade

A garment that you can not miss for Christmas is the typical Christmas print sweater, but this one that I propose is something different. The back is slightly longer and being a longer than normal jersey you can wear it as a dress with leggins or thick socks and jeans and high boots.

This outfit will become one of your favorites because the sweater is easy and quick to make and in two afternoons you will have it done. If you want a Christmas print but you can’t find an elastic knitted fabric or a fleece lining that you like because it’s childish, you can use your own design. I usually use the Spoonflower website using a design from the website itself. You choose the fabric you want, and they print it for you. And you have a unique and perfect fabric for your projects. If you live in Spain you have the web printingfabrics with many fabrics to choose and prints on the web and your own creations.

Another must-have is a long fur pajama. Also with Christmas print. Sure you won’t take it off all winter.

Formal Christmas handmade

And we have already started with the most formal clothing for company and family dinners. A christmas dress inspired by mama Noel or the elves. You can use red fabric with black and white trims or green fabric with red and white trims. You already have the ideal dress for Christmas.

Now we have the presents. If you know how to knit or crochet, you have already solved the gifts. And also your accessories so you don’t get cold. You can make socks if you have something more level or a scarf, closed necks or hats if you want something simpler.

And here you’d have all your Christmas handmade. Without spending a lot of money and you’ll feel great about yourself for having done something with your own hands. You’ll see when people see you in your beautiful dress or open their Christmas presents.

Would you like to have a Christmas handmade?

Handmade Christmas decoration

I know there’s still a month to go before Christmas, but if you’ve decided this year that you don’t want to continue contributing to Christmas consumerism and save some money and also be more sustainable, you need to start doing handmade Christmas decoration as soon as possible.

This decoration can be done with your toddlers, friends or family. You can also give it as a gift for the invisible friend or for that friend who has just opened a house and this is her first Christmas.

It will be a new tradition in your house, you will give more value to those adornments that you have made. You will have them personalized with the name of your children, important dates, with that fabric of a dress that brings back memories of your childhood.

Now you have an excuse to go shopping at the fabric store that you no longer want to go through because you always end up stinging on something. Look for scraps of fabric (you only need a piece) with Christmas motifs, plain fabrics to match the colors of your home decor or Christmas decoration.

And even use those pieces of fabric you have left over from other projects to make these decorations.

Start now with your Handmade Christmas Decoration

I leave you several downloadable Christmas figures for you to use as a pattern to cut on the fabric, or as embroidery. And if you follow me on Instagram you will have many mini tutorials throughout this month so you can get started with your Handmade Christmas.

In this link you have your free downloads.

In this season, you always feel like doing something new. Start with a hobby that might become a fixture in your routine. Crafts are an affordable option, where you see quick results and don’t need a big investment of money and time.

It will help you on a personal level by reducing stress, increasing creativity and self-confidence. And not only that, by reducing your consumption, you will also save money and help the planet by reducing the waste of clothes you throw away each year, the emissions produced by factories to make those products. Because the pieces you make yourself have a much longer durability, you will take more care of them and the quality will be superior.

Leave me in the comments if you are also thinking about starting to create your own decorations. And don’t forget to tag me in Instagram #abelisfashion to see your creations.

Halloween DIY Costumes

If you follow me on Instagram and Facebook, you will know that I was a sponsor last week of the challenge “Sew your Halloween” organized by the Facebook group 52 weeks sewing challenge. A weekly challenge to make Halloween DIY Costumes.

I recommend this group. Each week they make a new challenge with different sponsors. They have a weekly Giveaway and if you have participated in the challenge and meet the rules, you can be a winner of one of their awards.

It’s a way to be motivated, to meet people who love sewing and who will help you if you have doubts or problems.

You still have time to participate in the challenges that remain. Just join the group.

Children are the kings of this Halloween party, everything is focused on them. Costumes, treats, decoration. And it’s normal. They have the best time. They go in costume to school or down the street without any shame.

Combine Halloween DIY Costumes.

Wouldn’t it be ideal to be able to go together? Your little princess and your queen. The best thing is to be able to make matching Halloween DIY Costumes.

Make a toile or prototype. Because it's important

Finally you have that pattern that you had always wanted to make that garment, but when you take the pattern, open it and see it you have realized that you are a little afraid to go to the fabric. That’s why you need to make a toile

It is important to do a test on toile, which is a prototype of the final garment. It is always used with a much cheaper similar fabric or of the same properties as the final fabric.

For example, if your fabric is going to be very steamy gauze you can use a cheaper fabric like some polyester tulle that costs 2-3 euros to make that toile and see how the final garment will look without wasting the ultimate fabric.

How to make a toile

There are fabrics, for example the glaze, which is the one that I always use, to do all my tests of the patterns is a fabric of smooth color quite cheap with a lot of body although there are several weights and it is the one that I usually use especially when I make cotton garments or armed what shirts are like, some dresses and so on.

If you have at home some fabric of some old sheet or pieces of fabric that give you to make a garment and you want to wear it will also be worth it and so you take advantage of fabric that has left over from other projects and that you can not use to make garments.

It is recommended that they are smooth fabrics of light colors so that you can make modifications in the neckline if it is very low and you want it higher or you like the round neckline and you prefer to put a v-neck so that the chalk or soap can look on top of the fabric and then you pass that on to paper patterns.

What is needed

Apart from what we’ve already seen:

  • Pattern
  • Scissors
  • Toile fabric
  • Thread and needle
  • soap or pencil to mark
  • Mannequin if you have or your own body

With this we can start now.

Once you sewe the garment as it says in the instructions, we see if it is what you wanted from the beginning or if it looks like the photo, if there is one.

Make a toile

If not, here come all the modifications we want you to make. Well of measurements, as you have in this post or form. Here goes everything to your liking and creativity.

If problems are how to fit it looser and we want it tighter, you can see this entry where I explain how to modify the finished garment and pass it to the patterns.

Conclusion

Toile are important because:

  • They save us fabric, frustrations with the pattern and time.
  • Can modify everything we want
  • See what the final garment is going to look like
  • Use the pieces of fabric in something useful
  • Know how to sewe in case we get any doubts
  • Practice our sewing skills

If you also make toiles and have other methods, leave it in the comments and we debate.

And of course subscribe to my newsletter so you don’t miss anything. And don’t forget to visit to start today with the closet of your dreams.

Modify measurements of a pattern

Before you start sewing you have picked up the pattern and want to adjust it to your measurements. Or you have measured the pattern and you see that the size you have chosen thinking it was yours does not correspond to reality. So you have to modify the measurements of that pattern.

You have no idea how this is done and you are probably regretting having bought that pattern. You are already seeing everything black and you think that everything is going to go wrong, that it will not look good …

Quiet. Take a deep breath several times and focus.

modificar las medidas de un patrón modify the measurements of a pattern

You have not lost your money and you will get a great garment. Only that the measures they have used are different. Something you need to know before drawing conclusions is that each brand, country, company, has some measures to make their patterns. That does not mean that they are badly made, just that they are not widespread.

This is especially noticeable when buying in oriental countries. Surely it has happened to you that when you buy online from countries like China, your clothes are dwarfed even though it is the same size as the store you have in your neighborhood.

That’s because the factory makes clothes for Chinese women, shorter and thinner than average, because they use them as a reference.

Ok. But does that mean that I can only buy in stores in my country?

No. You can modify these patterns in a very basic and simple way without knowing anything about pattern design.

How to modify the measurements of a pattern

Before you start cutting in the fabric, measure the whole pattern and measure yourself. You can add or remove the measure to the paper (so you will always have it modified) or directly on the fabric when you pass the patterns to the fabric.

I teach you to do it on the canvas directly. Although I recommend you do it on paper by adding pieces of paper if you have already cut it, or draw it before cutting.

Wait. Do I have to measure myself whole?

No. You’re just going to do it in a very basic way and with the measures that give you the most problems like the waist and hip chest.

modificar las medidas de un patrón modify the measurements of a pattern

With these measurements at hand you will modify in pattern. You only need to know where each measure is in the pattern. In almost all you have marked, but not if so, put it on your body and mark with a pencil where the most protruding part of your chest, where is your waist and the widest part of the hip.

Voucher. You already have everything. Now it’s time to pass it to your measurements. These measures are complete, that is, an edge. But your employer is only one quarter of that measure. You only have to divide your measure between 4. That is your measure. Pass it to the pattern

And that’s it. As simple as that. Without knowing pattern and without many accounts.

Now I leave the video so you can see how you have to draw it.

https://youtu.be/1G_T9UlaviY

I leave the pattern that I modify so that my body will adapt. It’s a dress from the winter collection but I usually wear it in the spring because it’s pretty cool.

Adjust a garment

It has happened to many of us, and it still happens to me, that I take a pattern, I make the garment and then when I’m going to try it, I have a big chest, waist or hip. Or even up on the back and there are some very ugly wrinkles and you have to adjust the garment.

Well, I am going to show you the way in which I usually modify these garments once sewn and tested in the body. It requires a little bit of expertise and some sewing skills.

But anyway it is quite easy to do and even if you are a rookie you can do it. Even this method will be useful for clothes that you already have at home and that you need to adjust well because you have left wide or why you want to make some modification and want to adjust it more to your figure.

What do I have to know to adjust a garment?

The first thing you have to know is the measurements of your body. And how do you want that garment if you want it fitted everywhere or only on the hip or just on the chest?

It will also influence a bit the fabric to adjust the garment or not. If you have already washed that fabric before taking the garment you know that if it shrinks you will be a little bit or maybe it will not shrink again. It is also very important if we are going to want it very tight because if it is going to take us it will be even tighter and that must be taken into account enough.

Adjust a garment ajustar una prenda

What do I need?

You will need these materials:

  • The garment
  • Pins
  • soap or pencil to mark
  • scissors
  • needle and thread or sewing machine
  • a mannequin, if you are going to make the garment to a standard size or your own body and a mirror

If you are going to make the modifications of a garment of yours on your own body you will need help from another person. When you move the garment moves with you and you can make wrinkles where they should not be or adjust areas that stretch and when you get well you will be very tight or too loose.

If you do not have anybody or a mannequin, the other option is to do it directly with your measurements. It is a step more complicated and maybe it is not adjusted how you would like. This step I will show you in another post with another video.

Well I do not roll up anymore and I leave the video so you can see how it is done. The subtitles are in Spanish but you can change them.

https://youtu.be/7ntT73sm5DE

And here the entrance. It is the method that I use and I was taught to do. Surely there are a thousand more forms and each one does it in a different way.

If you are going to do it on your body, turn the garment over and do it the other way round, it will be more comfortable to see the sewing lines and where you have to adjust and not have to turn it over again.

If you use another way to adjust the garments once you have already sewn them or garments that you already have in your closet and that have remained large or small, leave me in the comments so you can see it and thus have all new forms and methods.

And of course if you have already finished with all the sewing projects you had and want to start a new one, do not forget to visit my store. New summer models that you will surely love, so I invite you to visit them and buy them.

Transform a jeans into a Bermuda shorts in 10 minutes

Yes, you read correctly, you can transform a jeans in just 10 minutes and you do not need anything more than a needle, thread, a meter, pins and scissors.

I had two jeans that had been somewhat short but waist are perfect, and that today is a miracle, I did not want to throw them out so I decided to cut them. I also planned to buy some shorter jeans but without being shorts, so I kill two birds with one stone.

Surely you know how to do it and I do not discover anything new for you, but for those of you with some fear I show you the steps that I followed.

We started to transform a jeans

The first thing is to try on the jeans and measure the length we want. Ask someone for help because when you crouch to look at the measure, we move the hand and the meter. If you do not have anyone look in the mirror.

We cut it to our measure. I have left 4cm more to make the hem.

transform a jeans

Now I’m going to do the hem. I’ll do it double and out to make it look. Of 2cm each fold.

transform a jeans

I hold it with pins so that it does not move and is even. Now we give another turn over the same width.

Finally, we sew it. I only sew what I sewn by the seams on the sides so it does not look and is more polished. Iron so that the form stays better and do not turn around and ready.

Do you have any other way to transform the length of a jeans? And if not what you want is a challenge I leave the pattern to some shorts that will be like these jeans. Only you have to do them from scratch. It is an easy project with step-by-step instructions with images.

You create sustainable fashion

And you’re wondering, how do you do sustainable fashion?

By creating your own clothes you are the one that produces them, you do not depend on external factories where you do not have control over production. Now we are more aware than before about the impact we have on our environment and more specifically on the environment.

We try not to contaminate, use biodegradable products or that are less harmful to help the planet. Well, fashion is not far behind, you can create clothes that are made in an ethical and ecological way from your own home.

The processes of production of factories are much more aggressive because they use industrial machinery that spends a lot of energy, fuels and also in some factories, labor is used that does not have the conditions that they should have of human rights.

You can help

Sewing your own clothes you know the production processes that take place because you are the one that makes them. Your sewing machine spends half as much as an industrial sewing machine could cost.

The way to cut the fabric also influences, even the thread you waste at the time of sewing. Yes, it is true that you do not have control over how these fabrics have been dyed or how the printing has been done, but there are many online shops or factories where their processes are quite ecological or that use biodegradable or slightly noxious dyes.

If for you it is a problem also when buying colorful or patterned cloth you can always make them with natural dyes for example with flowers or tea even with vegetables such as beets.

The digital patterns, A solution

Buying digital patterns also contributes to sustainable fashion, because even if you print it on paper you only have to print the size you need at that moment. The instructions do not have to print them, you can always check them from your computer or on your mobile phone and you will have saved the transport and the company that sent you that pattern has spent paper that you do not know if it is recycled, the plastic to put that pattern and instructions and that do not spoil, the fuel that will spend that transport from the country to its destination …

You can save all that from your home, in addition, printing machines also spend a lot of ink which is quite harmful to the environment.

I shared this article on my facebook fanpage and I think we should all read it. This issue is becoming very serious and it created that we should all become aware of this issue.

I want to know your opinion and discuss this topic. And if you have some tricks to create garments in a more sustainable and ecological, comment and share.
