Let’s talk about fabrics

The fabrics are the headache of all designers and seamstresses. Choosing an incorrect fabric can change a garment completely.

In this post you will see how I chose a fabric for a dress.

In this post I want to show you how to choose the perfect fabric for your clothes. This is the method that I use.

For me shopping is not going to a mall to go from store to clothing store by looking at dresses shoes or bags. For me it is to go to the fabric stores to watch gossip see what’s new.

I could spend 2 hours in a store just looking at taking notes, doing some quick sketch, inspiring me to create new dresses or patterns that I already had or that I wanted to find some fabric that strikes me that, afterwards, I have not bought because I have a lot at home and I do not get anything else.

I’m sure it happened to you too. Well for those who are a little new or the world of fabrics and haberdasher gives you a little fear I created this entry. I will explain everything very slowly and well so that you understand it and lose that fear.

Fabrics by season

The first thing is to know for what season we are going to want the boss. The same pattern can be valid for several seasons with just changing the fabric.

If you choose a viyela or flannel for a winter dress you may have some cold. And this also influences.

And in the summer it can happen the other way around. There are cottons or linens that are almost transparent and we can have some displeasure by teaching something we do not want.

Fabrics by color and pattern

The color and the pattern also conditions us when choosing a specific fabric. There are not any in all the prints and colors we want.

To choose a color not only we must be guided by our personal taste, we must choose colors that are easy to match with the clothes in our wardrobe and for the occasion.

You can not go with a white dress to a wedding, or use a psychedelic print at a gala dinner.

Characteristics of our garment

We have decided on color and season, now we will see how we want that fabric to be. I explain. We want it to be rigid or light, heavier or semitransparent.

If it is of a model that we have seen in a magazine or we have it in cloth it is easier to list the properties that our garment will have. If we only have one drawing, as in the case of cosplay, it is more complicated but it can be achieved.

In Burda, the name of the cloth comes to us and that’s to be thankful for, but in many countries these fabrics do not exist or come by different names.

If you want to fly, the fabrics have to be light. This is ideal for layer skirts. If the fabric weighs, it will not create that flight like waves when turning. Imagine Marylin Monroe with a cloth cloth the mythical scene of the sewer. The scene would have been a failure.

Make a list before going to buy with all the features. Going around several stores, compare prices, colors, fabrics and qualities. If you have doubts about any feature ask a worker. They know a lot and will advise you very well.

Let yourself be advised by the dependents or a friend who has already used that fabric. And also from the clothes in your closet. The composition tells you a lot.

The why of the names of my patterns

Hello! Some have asked me for private messages on Instagram why these names of cities in some of my patterns

Well the reason is that they are places that I would love to go and that I have not been able to visit yet. They are also inspired by the places themselves when they see photographs, when they watch TV series or movies in which the actors were in those places and the clothes they were wearing at that time.

When I see a movie, I visit a new place or I just look at a picture, I imagine myself walking through those streets or visiting those monuments and I also imagine the clothes I’m going to wear.

In most cases they are all dressed as partying and how to dream is free, I imagine that they invite me to a dance or that I attend a gala, full of very elegant people with this type of dresses.

Coincidentally I do not have any dress with the name of the city where I live. But for the next collection I’ll include it.

The legends, books and stories that I read are also part of that inspiration to create the dress. Each city has its legends or stories and they are an intrinsic part of why they are like that and that is what I want to convey in the pattern.

It is true that each one gives their own personality and style to the dress, but when reading how that dress was created, it also transports them to that place and leaves their vision in the dress.

I love seeing what you do with the patterns that you buy and although at the moment you do not encourage anyone to share it, I hope that after reading this you show me the inspiration that you have had to create that garment.

How to prepare the suitcase

Maybe this sounds like you: you go a few days of rest anywhere and suddenly when you go to prepare the suitcase, instead of a small one for those days you have four and you end up putting the same pants with four or five shirts.

You are the only one, it also happens to me and it seems that you are moving instead of just leaving for two days to rest.

But do not worry, because in the video that I recorded for Easter, due to technical problems I could not upload to my channel. Instagram, I upload it now so you have it in mind for your summer vacation or a weekend that you want to go.

It’s the first video I upload and I’m not very good at public speaking in front of a camera.

The application that I use in the video is this one. I use Android app because my mobile is Android but I imagine that in Apple you will have some similar.

How I say in the video is something that I do to the letter so as not to take too much. This is very useful so as not to overpay for the suitcase.

Make your wedding dress without spending much in a week

You read well. If you have some sewing notions your wedding dress will be ready in a week.

Just need some time (with three, four hours a day depending on your knowledge) and fabric.

Maybe you do not have that spectacular fairytale princess dress full of layers of tulle that you have cut out of the bridal magazine, but you can have a beautiful dress, made by yourself, unique and completely personalized.

Weddings are very expensive and if your budget is something tight this can be a good expense to save a little.

If sewing is not your thing, you can ask a dressmaker to make it for you by taking your fabric or a friend who knows what sews. You can ask your friend to make this your wedding gift and you will have saved all the dress.

For this dress you need:

Lining: 11.95 € / m

As you can see, you do not need a very high budget for the wedding dress. I have chosen cheaper materials, but if you like natural silk, jacquard or gipp your budget can shoot a little.

You will not have to spend hours searching in thousands of stores trying on one dress after another. Being you who do it you will know that you will be perfect, that this is the color you were looking for and the style you wanted.

You have thousands of options to do. From the long jumpsuits (an advantage that allows you to not have to be combining blouse and bottom), long or short dresses.

And if the model you like you can do it in more colors or adding a different adornment to use it in the next one.

A wedding dress can cost between € 80 and € 500. A meter of crepe leaves you from € 6.95. The only thing you invest is time and that’s what it costs the most but if you already know what you want in the end you save it.

SOS: What to wear for a themed wedding

You have been invited to a wedding and you have already gone shopping to see what dress you are going to buy, shoes and purse. But you read the invitation better and you realize it’s a themed wedding.

You have to be dressed in the theme of the wedding but you do not want to go in disguise. Help!

If the theme of the wedding is not familiar, look for information online, get a small moodboard to see the type of dress, colors and other ornaments that you can wear.

When you have all of that, look for inspiration. On Pinterest you have a lot of ideas. Surely someone has brought something similar to that thematic wedding.

I am going to show you different complete looks, including makeup, hairstyle and all the accessories so that you go perfect and it does not look like you are disguised.

Greek Themed Wedding Looks

If the wedding to which you are invited is inspired by Greek mythology or ancient Greek age these sets are your solution.

Make gathered sleeves fast without despairing.

We all love those gathered sleeves that we see in romantic and period dresses, but we do not know how to make them without dying in the attempt.

Well, it’s not as difficult as it seems. There are several methods that can be followed to gather them. From passing a basting, pulling and gathering (it is easiest if the fabric is thin) to make the folds to the size that we want (for the most perfectionists).

I use a method that has worked well for me and is easy. In the sleeve hem I put an elastic band the size of my wrist. When sewing the rubber the sleeve is already puckered by itself and I can put the sleeve by the arm without having to make an opening.

If you are new, this mode will be very easy for you because it does not require having very advanced sewing skills. And if you already have more knowledge is a quick method to have them ready in a moment.

If you want you can use this method to do it in sleeves that are big or to gather the sleeves of shirts and dresses that you want. You just have to undo the hem of the sleeve a bit and sew the rubber.

Invisible zipper: How to sew it correctly

Hello!! New Sunday, new tutorial. And this time it’s about the invisible zipper. This is my favorite method to close all my clothes. It does not look and is quick to put.

You have to have a bit of skill and be careful not to sew it upside down or not to go wrong on your side.

You can see it as many times as you like and follow the written instructions complemented with the video. It is easy to sew but my advice is to baste before you see that it is well sewn and in the position you have to go.

That does not happen to me. I sewed it with a spin without basting it before because I was in a hurry to finish it and when I uncrossed it I was left with my teeth in my hand.
