We all love those gathered sleeves that we see in romantic and period dresses, but we do not know how to make them without dying in the attempt.
Well, it’s not as difficult as it seems. There are several methods that can be followed to gather them. From passing a basting, pulling and gathering (it is easiest if the fabric is thin) to make the folds to the size that we want (for the most perfectionists).
I use a method that has worked well for me and is easy. In the sleeve hem I put an elastic band the size of my wrist. When sewing the rubber the sleeve is already puckered by itself and I can put the sleeve by the arm without having to make an opening.
If you are new, this mode will be very easy for you because it does not require having very advanced sewing skills. And if you already have more knowledge is a quick method to have them ready in a moment.
If you want you can use this method to do it in sleeves that are big or to gather the sleeves of shirts and dresses that you want. You just have to undo the hem of the sleeve a bit and sew the rubber.
Video tutorial of gathered sleeves
Well, I do not roll up anymore and I leave the video so you can see how it is done.
And if you like the puckered sleeves I have several patterns with these sleeves so you can put into practice what you have learned in the video.
Dresses with gathered sleeves
The St. Petersburg dress for those who have more knowledge of sewing as it has several pieces to join.
Byzantium is another of the dresses for puckered sleeves. In fact it is the one you have in the video.
And one last example, the forest dress. A dress type 20s with low waist with steering wheel and peter pan collar.
