Modify measurements of a pattern

Before you start sewing you have picked up the pattern and want to adjust it to your measurements. Or you have measured the pattern and you see that the size you have chosen thinking it was yours does not correspond to reality. So you have to modify the measurements of that pattern.

You have no idea how this is done and you are probably regretting having bought that pattern. You are already seeing everything black and you think that everything is going to go wrong, that it will not look good …

Quiet. Take a deep breath several times and focus.

You have not lost your money and you will get a great garment. Only that the measures they have used are different. Something you need to know before drawing conclusions is that each brand, country, company, has some measures to make their patterns. That does not mean that they are badly made, just that they are not widespread.

This is especially noticeable when buying in oriental countries. Surely it has happened to you that when you buy online from countries like China, your clothes are dwarfed even though it is the same size as the store you have in your neighborhood.

That’s because the factory makes clothes for Chinese women, shorter and thinner than average, because they use them as a reference.

Ok. But does that mean that I can only buy in stores in my country?

No. You can modify these patterns in a very basic and simple way without knowing anything about pattern design.

How to modify the measurements of a pattern

Before you start cutting in the fabric, measure the whole pattern and measure yourself. You can add or remove the measure to the paper (so you will always have it modified) or directly on the fabric when you pass the patterns to the fabric.

I teach you to do it on the canvas directly. Although I recommend you do it on paper by adding pieces of paper if you have already cut it, or draw it before cutting.

Wait. Do I have to measure myself whole?

No. You’re just going to do it in a very basic way and with the measures that give you the most problems like the waist and hip chest.

With these measurements at hand you will modify in pattern. You only need to know where each measure is in the pattern. In almost all you have marked, but not if so, put it on your body and mark with a pencil where the most protruding part of your chest, where is your waist and the widest part of the hip.

Voucher. You already have everything. Now it’s time to pass it to your measurements. These measures are complete, that is, an edge. But your employer is only one quarter of that measure. You only have to divide your measure between 4. That is your measure. Pass it to the pattern

And that’s it. As simple as that. Without knowing pattern and without many accounts.

Now I leave the video so you can see how you have to draw it.

I leave the pattern that I modify so that my body will adapt. It’s a dress from the winter collection but I usually wear it in the spring because it’s pretty cool.
